The Martial Eagle is the undisputed heavyweight of Africa’s skies, measuring up to 1 meter tall with a wingspan of 2.6 meters. It has dark brown upperparts, a white belly speckled with dark spots, and piercing yellow eyes that seem to see everything. This apex predator soars at incredible heights, scanning the savanna for prey. It feeds on guinea fowl, bustards, monitor lizards, monkeys, and even small antelope. Its hunting dives are devastatingly fast and powerful. Martial Eagles prefer open savanna, thornveld, and lightly wooded areas where they can spot prey easily. They are territorial, with each pair occupying huge home ranges. They nest in massive stick platforms built high in tall trees or on cliffs, reused year after year. The female lays a single egg, and breeding cycles are slow — only one chick every two years. Both parents are fiercely protective of their nesting site. Despite their dominance, Martial Eagles are vulnerable due to habitat loss, electrocution on power lines, and persecution from farmers who fear they threaten livestock. They are now listed as Vulnerable in South Africa.
